“Son, if I’m going to do something, I’m going to do it right” were the words of shooting legend Jerry Miculek right after he took the Open division title at the U.S. Practical Shooting Association’s Multi-Gun National Championships in a come from behind victory that was sure to get onlooker’s hearts pumping a little harder. Vegas’s Desert’s Sportsman’s Rifle & Pistol Club hosted the annual three-day shooting extravaganza from September 10-12 which saw 150 of the nation’s most renowned marksmen compete for coast-to-coast bragging rights.  A winner three times previously (2005,2007 and 2008), Miculek had placed second in last year’s contest. This year’s gold medal grab additionally earns Miculek the Senior Open division title.

U.S. Practical Shooting Association is the governing body for the practical shooting in the U.S.  Its more than 19,000 members compete in matches every week throughout the country. The USPSA MultiGun National Championships represents the “top of the mountain” in the scope of these regional matches and is a true trial by fire for competitive gunman, subjecting shooters to 12 stages that showcase their aptitudes for rifles, shotguns and pistols.

Miculek trailed most of the match but poached the lead on the 10th stage and held onto it, ending his day with a score of 1997.2577. Facing a platoon of shooters half his age, Miculek showcased veteran rifle accuracy, scoring hits faster despite his spry opponent’s ability to cover ground quicker, and ultimately securing his fourth championship title.
