As a part of an industry contest designed to select a manufacturer for the newest Abrams tactical round, ATK Armament Systems Group has been awarded a three-year, $77 million contract. Under the contract, ATK will develop and qualify the M829E4 120mm Advanced Kinetic Energy round for the U.S. Military’s M1A2 SEP Abrams Main Battle Tank. What do all these acronyms mean?
The newest 120mm round being developed for the tank will essentially offer a cartridge that can penetrate heavy armor. The round will enable the M1A2 SEP Abrams to engage targets in a variety of terrains, and will be designed for increased speed of use, a factor the Military hopes will increase tank crew survival rates during engagement.
Said Bruce DeWitt, the Vice President and GM of ATK Advanced Weapons division, “During our 30 years of program experience partnering with the Army, we have type classified 10 of the 12 120mm tactical and training rounds for the Abrams tank. This experience makes ATK uniquely qualified to develop this next generation capability for the Army… ATK provided the 120mm ammunition that helped ‘upgun’ the Abrams from a 105mm to a 120mm main gun and we look forward to working with the Army to maintain the Abrams’ standing as the world’s dominant tank.”
Upon completion of the next 120mm round development phase, ATK will have conducted both Engineering Manufacture Design (EMD) phases required to qualify the round for use with the M1A2 SEP Abrams.
ATK was selected to complete the second development phase after industry manufacturers competed in a ballistic and firing demonstration tests.
