Pentagon Replicates Avatar Movie with Robots for Soldiers

On Feb. 13, DARPA, the Pentagon’s extreme research wing, unveiled their new project titled “Avatar” that will have soldiers partner with a bi-pedal machine surrogates.

Similar to the idea displayed in the Hollywood hit Avatar the appropriately named project will work to develop interfaces and algorithms that will keep soldiers off the battlefield and put semi-autonomous machines in their stead. The robots would be developed to be intelligent and agile enough to complete the dirty work war necessitates.

DARPA has already been looking at large, lifelike robots that mimic a soldier’s physiology. The AlphaDog, their development designed to carry gear during combat, has been designed to follow a human commander using visual sensors and can even respond to voice commands.
