8 Year Old Girl in Critical Condition After Shooting at Elementary School in Washington

An eight-year-old-girl is in critical condition after a gun in her classmate’s backpack discharged in their classroom at Armin Jahr Elementary, located in a quiet residential neighborhood in Bremerton, WA, Feb. 22.

The gun was stored inside a nine-year-old boy’s backpack and accidentally discharged after the boy struck a nearby classmate with the bag. The girl was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where she underwent surgery later that afternoon. The school, which has about 400 students, went into lockdown and parents were called to pick up their children later in the day.

The boy, who brought the gun to school, has been booked into a juvenile detention center and is under investigation for unlawful possession of a gun, bringing a dangerous weapon to school and third-degree assault. Police are still investigating how he acquired the loaded firearm.
