Californian Woman Killed by Cannon Blast

A 38-year-old woman is dead from shrapnel wounds in California after her boyfriend loaded a cannon with fireworks powder and shot it through his mobile home on Tuesday.

39-year-old Richard Fox was arrested in the mountain community of Potrero near San Diego for investigation of exploding a device resulting in death. Evidence suggests Fox may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the blast. Three other adults and a 4-year-old girl were also in the home at the time of the explosion, but escaped injury.

Moments after the blast, Richard Fox expressed his anguish to his brother, Jerry Fox, over the phone: “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. It should have been me.”

According to local sheriff department’s Sgt. David Martinez investigators have not yet established a motive, nor have they determined if the blast was accidental. One thing that has been established is that the four rules of firearm safety apply to cannons, too.
