Marine Corps Sergeant Faces Dismissal After Facebook Comments

Marine Corps Sgt. Gary Stein, who earlier this month had his on-the-job social media privileges revoked after posting criticisms of the current administration on Facebook, is now facing possible dismissal from the Corps.

On Wednesday Stein was informed by the Marines that the Facebook page he started called Armed Forces Tea Party violates a Pentagon policy barring troops from political activities. Stein said that he started the page in hopes of encouraging fellow service members to exercise their right to free speech. On March 8, after hearing allegations that Stein had posted political statements his commanding officer ordered a preliminary inquiry which eventually led to administrative action.

If found to be in violation of the directive Stein would not only be discharged but have his rank reduced to lance corporal. On Wednesday Stein was removed from his job at the Marine Corps Recruiting Depot in San Diego and given a desk job with no computer access.

The Marine Corps agreed that Stein is allowed to express his personal opinions, as long as they do not give the impression he is speaking in his official capacity as a Marine.
