Minnesota counties are seeing a dramatic increase in the number of gun permit requests.
The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office in Minnesota has just shared its gun statistics with the public, and it’s looking like the good folks of Minnesota love guns just as much as the rest of the country. The sheriff’s department received 1,875 gun permit applications in the first four months of 2012, compared to just 1,220 during the same period in 2011. That’s an overall increase of 54%!
And don’t think for one second that 2011 was a slow year for Minnesota, either. Last year the sheriff’s department got the most gun permit requests since 2003. They estimate that there are roughly 18,607 permit holders in Hennepin County, which means that these newest gun owners from the last four months alone account for staggering 10% of the current gun-owning local population.
We can’t help but wonder what’s making so many people decide to pull the trigger, so to speak, and apply for gun permits. Could it be the upcoming election? Rumors of 2012 doom? A recovering economy? Whatever it is, we hope it sticks around.
