Dumervil may play football in Denver, but he spends his off seasons in his home state of Florida, evidently to enjoy the fine weather, experience Florida cuisine, and brandish guns at strangers in traffic disputes.
Dumervil was driving with Andy Auguste when Kristine Ramirez and her husband cut the two off. The traffic was going nowhere fast, so it was a perfect storm for a bit of weekend road rage. Dumervil and Auguste got into a verbal confrontation with Ramirez, and witness reports indicate that the two men approached Cardoza’s car and lifted their shirts to show that they were each carrying a gun.
Taking that as their cue to get the hell out of there, Ramirez attempted to back her car away from the scene. Police arrived shortly thereafter to extract Dumervil and Auguste from the car at gunpoint. Police searched the vehicle and found a firearm in the glove compartment, despite the fact that Dumervil told police that there wasn’t anything in the car.
Dumervil was arrested and charged with felony aggravated assault, though he is currently out on bail. If convicted, he could face up to five years in jail, in addition to whatever disciplinary actions the NFL might take. The Broncos haven’t weighed in on the allegations yet. They said in a statement, “This is a very serious allegation, and we will thoroughly review the details while the legal process runs its course.”
There’s a chance that Dumervil will get off of the charges, though. An eyewitness reports that at one point Ramirez’s husband got out of the car and threw something at Dumervil’s vehicle, striking it. Assuming that nonverbal language is the same in Florida as it is everywhere else in the country, them’s fightin’ words actions.
