DPMS Showcases New TAC2 Carbine at Outbreak Omega (VIDEO)

At this year’s Outbreak: Omega V, the world’s largest zombie-themed 3-gun competition with 24 stages for rifle, shotgun and pistol shooter, DPMS showcased their new TAC2 carbine. Designed to be a smooth-recoiling all-purpose carbine, the TAC2 naturally suits multi-gun competitions.

What separates the TAC2 from many other AR-15-pattern rifles is the full rifle-length gas system. Originally called a “Dissipator” rifle, carbine-length ARs with rifle-length gas systems have been hard to pull off. With such a short length of barrel past the gas port, early rifle designs did not stay pressurized long enough for the bolt to cycle.

Many companies install two gas blocks to create the appearance of Dissipators with one mid- or carbine-length low-profile block that is connected to the gas system and one dummy gas block up front for a rifle-length handguard. DPMS has figured out a way to use a rifle-length gas system with the TAC2 with all the benefits that conveys.

With its rifle-length gas system, the TAC2 has a very short dwell time−the amount of time a bullet stays in the barrel after passing the ejection port while keeping the rifle pressurized−which makes this one soft-shooting AR, and for those who can take advantage of it, a slight but not insignificant accuracy benefits. Plus, the full-length handguard give the user more grip and stance options, and the longer sight radius allows for more precision aiming.

Other features of the TAC2 are compelling as well. The rifle has a free-floating 16-inch lightweight-profile barrel with a 1:9 twist. The handguard is a modular design with a full-length Picatinny rail on top with attachment points for optional 3-, 6- and 9-o’clock accessory rails.

DPMS includes a good amount of Magpul furniture as well, including an ACS telescopic buttstock, MOE grip and Enhanced trigger guard and MBUS rear backup iron sight. The TAC2 comes with one 30-round magazine.

Finally, for being a feature-rich AR the TAC2 isn’t too expensive. In fact, the price may surprise you. The TAC2 is now available in stores and priced at around $1,100.

DPMS is one of many Outbreak Omega sponsors, but we have to admit the TAC2 stands out. While this year’s competition has run its course, with over $100,000 in prizes, it’s one 3-gun competition worth trying out.
