CNN pundit Piers Morgan will contemplate self-deportation should the U.S. fail to bring about radical change to its federal gun laws.
In an op-ed in the Daily Mail, Morgan responded to a petition started on the White House website that calls for his deportation citing “his effort to undermine the Bill of Rights and for exploiting his position as a national network television host to stage attacks against the rights of American citizens.”
Morgan said the following to the almost 100,000 Americans who’ve signed the ‘Deport Piers Morgan’ petition:
In conclusion, I can spare those Americans who want me deported a lot of effort by saying this: If you don’t change your gun laws to at least try to stop this relentless tidal wave of murderous carnage, then you don’t have to worry about deporting me.
Although I love the country as a second home and one that has treated me incredibly well, I would, as a concerned parent first – and latterly, of a one-year-old daughter who may attend an American elementary school like Sandy Hook in three years’ time – seriously consider deporting myself.
What does Morgan want U.S. lawmakers and the Obama administration to do to curtail gun violence?
Well, in addition to backing the gun control du jour (a renewal of the Clinton-era Assault Weapons Ban, including a ban on high-capacity magazines and the closing of the inaptly named ‘gun show loophole’) Morgan proposes confiscation for all ‘assault weapons’ and incarceration for those citizens who refuse to give up their guns.
Obama should follow up by launching a Government buy-back for all existing assault weapons in circulation (as worked successfully in Los Angeles last week). I would go further, confiscating the rest and enforcing tough prison sentences on those who still insist on keeping one.
Either you ban these assault weapons completely, and really mean it, or you don’t.
You may disagree with Morgan’s solution (who doesn’t?), but you have to respect his honesty. Most high-profile gun control advocates don’t have the temerity to admit that all-out confiscatory gun policies are what they really want to see implemented.
The reason for their silence? They know the American public – by and large – would view them as being ‘unbelievably stupid’ for endorsing such utter ‘claptrap.’
For Morgan though, that’s clearly never been a concern.
