Miss America isn't always chosen by hotness factor. They're chosen a lot of times based on how charismatic they can be. She didn't stammer or have trouble with anything she said. She's very concise and eloquent with her speeches. She's presentable, yet not overly "dolled up" or fake looking. The pageant is trying to give itself some credibility now because it's always been seen as some sort of bimbo parade for shallow ditzes. This girl could easily be passed off as a possibly ivy league student or other well educated prospect for just about anything. Doesn't mean that she is, but at least she could play the part.

Her comments are nonsense that she herself doesn't believe. What is the first thing she and everyone else does at the first sign of violence, in schools or otherwise? Why, they make panicked phone calls for someone to send people carrying guns, who have even more guns in their cars in case the guns they carrying aren't enough (police). If /those people can't handle the situation, they call people with even more and bigger guns to handle the situation (SWAT teams).
