An unbelievable photo essay by Andrew Breese on “The Boneyard” – the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group at Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, Arizona. The Boneyard contains over 5000 retired military aircraft, stored for possible future use of parts.

Saw a picture in a National Geographic when I was a kid in the 50's; an aerial view of some South Pacific island covered with old B-24 bombers. But each of the planes seemed distorted, bent in the middle. Then I read the caption that said that bulldozers had been used to "break the back" of the Liberators so they would never fly again. Then they just left them there to rot. I have often wondered if they were still there, hidden under almost 70 years of jungle, like the bones of flying dinosaurs waiting to surprise and amaze those who stumble on them some day.

That would be cool and interesting to see... there is one operational B-24J model it's owned by The Collings Foundation, I've seen this plane fly and have touched her it's rather amazing her history and to see her fly...walking through her found myself wondering what it must have been like to fly into battle. http://www.collingsfoundation.org/tour_b-24j.htm

makes me sad.... so many beautiful aircraft forgotten and rotten. they should sell some of them off to the civilian market like they did P-51s and such after WW2. but that's impossible at the moment as they made it illegal for a civilian to buy a jet powered aircraft =(.

It's not illegal to buy military jet aircraft. The only one I know of that you could not buy was the F14 and they either destroyed all of them or gutted them and put them on display, to prevent Iran (the only country they were exported to) from aquiring parts to repair theirs. Many people across this country own and operated military jets stripped of all ordinance.

Most of the planes don't rot away thats due to the dry humid locations of all of the aircraft boneyards around here in the us. Many of these planes are also passenger plane that outlived their use not just military

They do recycle these aircraft. These planes are parted out and are sold in their entirety to other nations. This place actually turns a profit.

AMARC was the only unit within the DOD that turns a profit. Most of these planes are not left there to rot. Many can be re-generated and back in action within 12 hours. Some are parted out and others are sold to other nations.

So sad to see. I had 3,500 hours in EC-135s with the 2ACCS... and they are sitting there, falling apart.

Glad to see someone realizes this is a salvage yard, a salvage yard for aircraft. AMARC is not a waste of money, it actually turns a profit. Everything wears out in time even aircraft, here the DOD does a great job at reutilizing parts and aircraft.

Over 20 years in the Air Force and have probably flown in at least half of the aircraft in the boneyard. It is sad that they are just wasting away but quite a memory maker.

Few "waste away", they are parted out. Many are sealed up and can be ready for duty within 24 hours. Others are sold to other countries for their Air Forces.

Or they are used for parts on aircraft that are still flying from unsound to fly any longer aircraft. Plus the Air Force recycles for scrap a number of unsound aircraft for aluminum going rate.

during the cold war, and past arms treaties. B52's were cut into pieces and left in the open so soviet satellites could see that The B 52's were in fact destroyed.
