M65 Atomic Cannon, aka Atomic Annie, was a towed piece artillery piece that was designed to fire a nuclear bomb. 20 of these cannons were made in the early 1950’s for the cold war. The video you see above was it’s first successful test in 1953 in the Upshot-Knothole series of nuclear tests – the shell traveled 7 miles. The cannons were then deployed to Europe and Korea, and were in constant motion to avoid detection. The cannon was officially retired in 1963.
