A Massachusetts man recently discovered bears like bird seed. And apparently they don’t like being disturbed while enjoying it.
Richard Ahlstrand of Aubrurn, Massachusetts found himself face-to-face with a 400-pound black bear as he restocked his bird-feeder last week. Armed with a shotgun, Mr. Ahlstrand shot and killed the bear. “I didn’t have time to aim through the sights, but I aimed in the direction of the head on this thing and I pulled the trigger before he got me,” he said.
But authorities aren’t convinced he acted in self-defense. They’ve charged him with illegally killing a bear, illegally baiting a bear, illegal possession of a firearm and failure to secure a weapon. “They got me set up now like I’m some kind of murderer,” says Ahlstrand. “If that [bear] ever jumped on me, I wouldn’t even be here right know, I don’t think. I know it was going to seriously maul me.”
