Anti-Gay Marriage Historian Shoots and Kills Himself at Notre Dame Cathedral

dominique-venner-3[1]In a shocking move to protest France’s new law authorizing gay marriage, a prominent historian shot and killed himself in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris.

The 850-year-old church was cleared out when 78-year-old Dominique Venner, a noted essayist and historian, entered the cathedral and placed a sealed envelope on the alter before shooting himself in the head with a handgun. A strict Catholic who frequently rallied against gays and Islamists, Venner argued that more drastic measures were necessary to combat same same-sex marriage since peaceful protest failed to work.

In his last blog entry, Venner wrote:

“It certainly will require new, spectacular and symbolic gesture to shake the sleepiness, shaking anesthetized consciousness and awaken the memory of our origins. We are entering a time when words must be authenticated by acts.”
