Newly released photos of an intense 1970 firefight between U.S. troops and a Viet Cong sniper

James Speed Hensinger, a photographer and paratrooper with 173rd Airborne Brigade, has recently released photos he took of a 1970 firefight at his Army camp near the coastal city of Da nang.

According to Hensinger, the base had been taking sniper fire for a number of nights from the local Viet Cong located in the hills above the bae. Anticipating the snipers return, the Americans prepared a heavy response.

Hensinger’s long exposer photographs represent roughly 15 seconds of gun fire.
