An argument between neighbors in the same apartment complex ended in two police officers being shot, one fatally. Around midnight Saturday night, officers arrived at the Killeen, Texas apartment complex after reports that a resident, who was said to be a military veteran, was threatening people at the apartment pool while carrying a long rifle. Witnesses say that the incident started over a tattoo, but did not elaborate.
When police arrived, the man was carrying an AK-47 and acting in a threatening manner. He fired one shot, but then looked as if he was going to give himself up. However, as officers closed in to arrest him, he picked the gun up again and started shooting, striking two of the officers.
One of the officers was struck several times and died a short time later at a local hospital. The other officer underwent emergency surgery where he is now in stable condition.
The Killeen Police Department stated that this was the first officer they have lost in the line of duty since 1917.
Names of the officers have not been released.
