Brina Milikowsky earns approximately $99,000 a year working as a policy advisor for New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
While she works for Bloomberg, the people of New York — more specifically, the taxpayers — actually pay her salary.
Ordinarily this might not be a big deal. But given that one of her primary jobs is to lobby for tougher state and federal gun laws, those who value you their Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms might object to Milikowsky’s situation.
At a recent gathering in Washington, D.C. for the Center for American Progress, Milikowsky disclosed that she does “legislative advocacy, primarily,” and that she, along with the help of Bloomberg’s pro-gun control organization Mayors Against Illegal Guns, is aiming to put pressure on lawmakers to reform the nation’s gun laws.
“We want to give Congress hell during the August recess when they’re home,” she said.
She also touted the progress they’ve made in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut, claiming that support for certain gun control measures has increased due to their advocacy, i.e., universal background checks.
“We counted 20 senators that would not have voted for this a year ago,” she said. “That is a huge shift in the mindset and the leadership of people in this town.”
“I’ve been lobbying Congress on this issue [universal background checks] since then,” Milikowsky said.
With respect to the state level, Milikowsky said that MAIG is looking to improve its outreach in the coming months.
“We need to be so much better and more organized and effective at stopping terrible legislation in statehouses,” adding, “will be doing a lot of state legislative activity starting in the winter.”
So, there you have it, a government employee who is clearing pushing a political agenda. Naturally, this pissed off a lot of people — not just gun owners.
“It’s clearly unethical for Mayor Bloomberg to use a taxpayer-funded staffer from his office to promote his anti-Second Amendment group’s lobbying,” Ken Boehm, co-founder of the National Legal and Policy Center, told the Washington Free Beacon.
“What could be more arrogant than forcing the over-taxed residents of New York City to pay for the salary of someone to pressure state and federal legislators on the billionaire mayor’s pet projects?”
Though, a spokesman for New York CIty Hall did not see a problem with Milikowsky’s gun control efforts.
“The Mayor’s top priority is keeping New Yorkers safe and that includes seeking sane gun laws in other states and D.C. to help reduce the flow of illegal guns to New York,” said John McCarthy.
“Brina Milikowsky has played a part in that effort — and the results have been very good,” he added.
Both MAIG and Milikowsky declined to comment on this story.
