A robbery victim in Houston fought back Thursday morning when he was the target of yet another armed robbery for the second time in less than two months. After the first incident he bought a gun, and when a trio of would-be robbers approached him he shot two of them, one critically.
According to a local news report, the man, who wanted to remain anonymous, was standing outside of his office building near his SUV about 7 a.m. when he was approached by three armed men attempting to rob him. But the man had been robbed just six weeks prior and had a newly purchased large-caliber handgun sitting in his vehicle.
One witness, Mark Arms, said he heard nine shots, although it was not confirmed if they were from the victim’s gun, the suspects’, or both. The victim did fire several shots however, striking two of the three robbers, as well as his own vehicle twice.
Following the gunshots, the three suspects then struggled with the victim, tearing his clothing and eventually taking his gun from him, although it was dropped in the suspects’ rush to get out of the area.
“There were three of them. They apparently had two guns and they were on him in a hurry. And he had the presence of mind to grab his gun and protect himself,” one witness said, who did not wish to be identified out of fear that the men would return to the area. “I’m really glad he had a gun because I think he might have been killed today,” she said.
Following the struggle, the first suspect ran into a nearby convenience store begging for help, but had disappeared by the time police arrived. He showed up at a local hospital several hours later with two gunshot wounds to his hands, and was then arrested and charged with aggravated robbery.
The second suspect was hit by gunfire and never left the scene.
“He kept sitting down, he took his shirt, rolled it up, put it to his belly. He was seriously injured,” one witness said.
That suspect, who was struck in the abdomen, was taken to a nearby hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
The third suspect fled the scene and has not been located.
No charges are expected to be filed against the victim who fired the shots in self-defense.
Other than receiving minor abrasions from the struggle with the suspects, the victim was not injured. His friends stated that he was rather shaken up over the ordeal, but thankful that he was not injured – and that he was armed.
