SIG Sauer has just announced a new contract with the New Jersey State Police for a shipment of 2,800 P229 Enhanced Elite pistols. These handguns will replace existing P228s that have been in service with the NJSP for the past 14 years.

“We are pleased to continue to provide the duty pistol carried by the men and women of the New Jersey State Police, said Tom Jankiewicz, SIG Executive Director of LEO sales in a press release. “The agency has been a valued member of the SIG Law Enforcement community for over a decade. We look forward to another decade of service with their new P229s.”

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol has selected the full-size P226 for their duty pistols, in .357 SIG. A less common caliber, its barrier penetration ability is a good fit for highway patrol officers that may be expected to shoot through vehicle glass or car doors.

“For law enforcement officers who work around vehicles and safety glass, the .357 SIG is a fantastic choice for a duty pistol caliber,” Jankiewicz said. “We’re extremely proud to add an agency with the legacy associated with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol to the SIG Sauer family.”

The contract calls for just over $1,800 pistols for the North Carolina Highway Patrol, with about 1,600 sworn officers in service with the department.

These announcements mean good things for SIG and prove that their established designs still carry water in the world of service pistols.

The NJSP’s decision to go with the P229 stems from their many years of experience with the P228, citing reliability, durability, ease-of-use and accuracy. They are going with an updated, modernized alternative that should last them for many more years.

The P229 was designed to replace the P228 with an updated milled stainless steel slide better suited for hot +P loads and .40 S&W and .357 SIG. The NJSP will continue with 9mm with its new P229s. Enhanced Elite upgrades include a railed frame for pistol accessories like weapon lights, forward slide serrations, a long, upswept beavertail for a high-up grip and 3-dot night sights.

The Enhanced Elite is an updated version of the original P229 with a slim one-piece E2 grip and a redesigned magwell for added capacity. The changes to the grip make the Enhanced Elite smaller and more universal for people with hands of all sizes. The grip also sports an aggressive texture that won’t let go even with dirty or wet hands. They are DA/SA pistols with SIG’s standard decocker and their Short Reset Trigger.

The P226 is the full-size model that has recently been updated with E2 grips and is in service with police departments all across the country.

If you’re interested in picking up an Enhanced Elite for yourself it has an MSRP of $1,200 and a street price of around $950. For more information check out the SIG P229 Enhanced Elite product page. The base model P229 can be found for a little less, depending on the configuration, for around $800. Details are available on SIG’s website.
