Dozens of Yazidis boarded an Iraqi military helicopter during a dramatic resupply/rescue mission at Mount Sinjar Monday.
Troops hurled supplies out of the helicopter as it hovered just feet above the ground. When the chopper finally touched down, it was nearly overtaken by desperate Yazidis seeking refuge from ISIS, CNN reported.
“We landed on several short occasions, and that’s where, amid this explosion of dust and chaos, these desperate civilians came racing towards the helicopter, throwing their children on board the aircraft,” CNN’s Ivan Watson said. “The crew was just trying to pull up as many people as possible.”
ISIS soldiers fired on the aircraft as it flew overhead and the troops on board retaliated with a live-fire response.
