Using a $10,000 donation from a local bank, volunteers from Rebuilding Together Nashville rallied together Thursday to provide desperately needed repairs for one of their resident World War II veterans.
Martha Buttrey and her husband, Leo, got married 68 years ago after Leo returned home from the war. They moved into the house shortly thereafter, but over the years many of the problems in the house just simply fell into disrepair. The couple did what they could to makes things better, but Martha is wheelchair-bound and Leo is disabled.
“We’re just on Social Security, and that’s all we have,” Martha said. “When something got bad, it had to stay bad.”
Martha said most everything in the home was given to them secondhand and many of the basic necessities – like the bathroom plumbing – just didn’t work all that well.
But by the time the day came to an end, the well-deserving couple had new windows, rotted wood replaced, a kitchen makeover complete with new cabinets and appliances, as well as the needed repairs to the home’s plumbing system.
“I just never had anything so good to ever happen,” said Martha, who added that the home would now be used for family gatherings.
