The shooting appears unrelated to the fallout in Missouri and in other parts of the country following the grand jury announcement that Darren Wilson was not indicted over the shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.
University City Police Department Det. Sgt. Fredrick Lemons told KSDK-TV police were called to the scene around 10 p.m. in response to a report of a burglary in progress.
When they arrived they found a single suspect shooting into the residence. The suspect then began shooting at the police.
As they approached the home one officer was shot in the chest, who returned fire as the suspect fled through the home’s back yard. The suspect is not believed to have been shot in return.
The suspect is thought to be the woman’s son, who they found after approaching the house.
The identities of the woman and the police officer have not been released. Although the woman died as a result of her wounds the officer is stated as being in stable, but serious condition.
Officers from theSt. Louis County Crime Scene Unit officers have been dispatched to the hospital to provide additional security and further the investigation in the search for the suspect.
While there have been reports of scattered gunfire, looting and arson following the Darren Wilson jury finding, there are still no reports of deaths as a result of civil unrest.
