Friends, family and fellow officers paid their respects Saturday at the funeral for NYPD Officer Rafael Ramos, who was fatally shot last week while sitting in his patrol car with his partner on a New York City street. The funeral was attended by approximately 25,000 law enforcement officers, who stretched over more than six city blocks.
But as emotions ran high there was one point during the service where respect was blatantly absent and a message was clearly given.
As New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio spoke as Ramos’ funeral, hundreds of officers turned their backs on him, just as they did when de Blasio entered the hospital for a press conference immediately after the shooting.
De Blasio has been accused of harboring hate towards the city’s law enforcement and contributing to the already taut relations between cops and the community.
