Black officer lends helping hand to heat struck Neo-Nazi during KKK rally

South Carolina KKK rally

Hate was high as the mercury was rising Saturday at South Carolina’s Statehouse during a rally protesting the removal of the Confederate flag, but amidst the tension, photographer Rob Godfrey captured a powerful photo.

South Carolina Director of Public Safety Leroy Smith – who is black – is seen apparently helping a white man, who judging by his attire is presumably a Neo-Nazi, to safety after the sweltering heat got the best of the man. Smith was reportedly making sure the man got to shelter and received water to get re-hydrated.

The rally, which had about 2,000 in attendance from various white supremacist groups and the New Black Panthers, resulted in five arrests after the protests turned not so peaceful.
