A Michigan woman who was believed to be the oldest U.S. veteran died Sunday at the age of 110 in West Bloomfield, just outside of Detroit, at an assisted living facility.
Emma Didlake signed up for the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps in 1943 as a 38-year-old wife and mother of five children. During the second World War, Didlake served stateside as a private and driver.
A year after signing on with the Army Corps, she moved from Alabama to Detroit, where she eventually became known as “Big Mama.”
Last month, Didlake met President Obama while in Washington, D.C. visiting monuments and memorials.
