Investigators in Houston report that Deleon Alonso Smith, 19, is dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound incurred while apparently posing for selfies to post on social media.
The man, set to start community college this week, has two children.
According to KPRC, Smith and his cousin found the gun earlier in the day and shot himself in the throat accidentally while in the bathroom with the firearm.
Smith’s death left his family in shock.
“It’s a numb feeling. It’s still unbelievable. Yesterday was my birthday and he came to wish me happy birthday, and now this kind of news,” said Smith’s grandmother Alma Douglas.
Smith’s death is not the first case of a selfie gone wrong this summer. In July a California man posing with a rattlesnake encountered in the wild was left fighting for his life after the venomous viper bit him.
While surviving, he was hit with $153,000 in medical bills for treatment and antivenom.
