The number of gun thefts in Missouri has been on the rise in recent years, and law enforcement officials are asking gun owners to be more diligent about protecting their goods.
“We have seen an increase of them being stolen from unlocked vehicles, mostly in residential neighborhoods, people leaving their guns in their car while they go inside and sleep for the night, and they come outside in the morning and it’s gone,” said St. Peters Police Officer Melissa Doss.
Paul Bastean with Ultimate Defense, a local gun range and training center, said gun owners can use specially made safes for securing firearms in their vehicles. Additionally, Bastean said criminals often look for NRA or other gun rights decals which could essentially advertise and increased likelihood of there being a gun inside the vehicle.
