A beloved pastor is dead after the man’s brother entered the St. Peters Missionary Baptist Church Sunday afternoon and shot the pastor while he was in his private study.
The shooting occurred around 12:30 p.m., following Sunday services while the choir was still gathered in the church singing.
Loretta Smith said they heard the gunshots and started running toward the door.
“It was awful, just awful,” Smith said.
William Schooler, 70, was pronounced dead at the scene. His brother, Daniel Gregory Schooler, 68, was arrested and charged with his murder. Daniel has a violent criminal history, which includes two convictions for felonious assault with a deadly weapon. He was also previously accused of kidnapping.
Sgt. Creigee Coleman of the Dayton Police Department confirmed that the incident was a domestic-type situation and there was no immediate danger to the public or other area churches.
