It took three emergency response teams to bring an Alabama prison to order after a riot Friday night left two correctional officers stabbed.
Authorities estimate about 100 prisoners at the William C. Holman Correctional Facility, located about 60 miles outside of Mobile, were involved in the riot that also resulted in multiple fires inside the facility’s dormitory.
The upheaval occurred after a fight broke out between two inmates and one of the correctional officers attempted to intervene. The officer was stabbed while trying to break up the fight, prompting the prison’s warden to come in and try to take control as well. However, the warden was also stabbed. Their injuries are not considered life-threatening.
A short cell phone video of the mayhem was posted by an inmate to Facebook, and now officials are working to determine how the inmate came to have the phone, which is prohibited contraband. Additionally, inmates are not allowed to have social media accounts.
