Members of the Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department in Texas assembled to see K9 Bretagne Corliss, believed to be the last Sept. 11th search dog, off to her Last Alarm.
The 16-year-old golden retriever joined CFVFD in 2000 as the founding canine member of the department’s K9 Search & Rescue Team and was certified as a FEMA Disaster Search Dog.
She deployed with Texas Task Force 1 to the World Trade Center in New York City immediately after the September 11th Attack in 2001.
Following her service at Ground Zero, Bretagne was tapped to assist in other disasters including Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, remaining active with the department until just a few weeks ago, serving as a community ambassador.
“Each week, she would visit a first grade classroom and listen to young readers, providing a non-judgmental ear, and soft paw,” notes the department. “She also visited students with special needs, such as autism. Her calm demeanor and warm heart helped the young and old through their own difficult moments.”
She was brought into the Fairfield Animal Hospital, Monday, in Cypress, to be euthanized.
