An 80-year-old woman is recovering from a gunshot wound after she accidentally shot herself in the parking lot of an Eastpointe, Michigan, Dollar Tree this week.
Bernice Hightower and her life-long friend, Jessie Billing, went to the store for what they thought would be a routine trip. But while getting out of the car, Hightower was putting her .22-caliber handgun into her purse when she accidentally dropped it and it fired.
Billing looked around, wondering where the gunshot came from, then realized her friend’s leg was bleeding. Billing said they needed to get back into the car and go to the hospital. Hightower, however, didn’t seem too bothered by the fact that she just got shot, asking Billing to stop for cigarettes on the way. Billing said no to the cigarettes, took her friend home and called an ambulance instead.
Billing said Hightower always carries the .22 with her everywhere she goes and she doesn’t think this incident will stop her from continuing to do so.
