Newsweek was apparently a little overzealous in predicting who would win the presidential election, and in fact, so certain Hillary Clinton would take the cake that they already shipped out copies of the “Madame President” issue before the ballots were even in.
Of course, it’s not uncommon practice during a big event – such as a presidential election – for members of the media to craft an article, or in this case an entire magazine, depicting each possible outcome. But to mail the copies out before an official confirmation is a big no-no.
But Newsweek, like every other publication, is produced by people and sometimes people just make mistakes.
“Like everybody else, we got it wrong,” said Tony Romando, CEO of Topix Media, the partner in charge of producing the magazine’s special issues.
Both issues were printed, but only the Madame President issues were shipped. Romando said although they already printed the Trump issue, more will have to be printed and shipped to keep up with the demand. Meanwhile, the Clinton issues were recalled, pulled from the shelves and will be pulped.
Romando said only 17 Madame President issues were sold before the mistake was realized. Those 17 copies will likely be worth a little more than just a few bucks now.
