In his latest string of controversial comments, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte appears to have admitted to murdering suspected criminals while serving as mayor of Davao before his presidency.
“In Davao I used to do it personally. Just to show to the guys [police] that if I can do it why can’t you,” Duterte said in a speech at the presidential palace Monday night.
“And I’d go around in Davao with a motorcycle, with a big bike around, and I would just patrol the streets, looking for trouble also. I was really looking for a confrontation so I could kill,” he added.
Duterte gave the speech while discussing plans for eradicating illegal drugs, a problem which has plagued the country but Duterte vowed to eliminate as president. However, Duterte’s less-than-conventional methods to tackle the drug problem and crime that comes with it has been met by stark criticism. Despite the backlash, Duterte says he has no plans to change his tactics.
