Authorities in Mobile, Alabama, said an elderly man fatally shot his 38-year-old son during an altercation Monday night, but the father said he acted in self-defense.
Police were called to the home shortly after 9 p.m. and found Corey Young suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The father said Young attacked him while armed with a knife, but during the assault, the man was able to retrieve a handgun and fired a single shot at his son.
The incident remains under investigation and once completed will be turned over to the grand jury for review.
Young’s death was the city’s first recorded homicide of 2017.
