A 24-year-old man shot two suspects, one fatally, after they broke into his mother’s Orange County, Florida, home Tuesday morning and put a gun to her head.
One suspect, Rasheen Hall Briggs, 24, died near the woman’s front yard, while the second suspect showed up at a local hospital about 20 minutes later with a gunshot wound. He was last said to be in critical but stable condition.
Authorities say the two broke into the 50-year-old woman’s home just before 11 a.m. and when they aimed a gun at her, the woman’s adult son came to her aid and shot the two suspects.
The son’s older brother told reporters the family was shaken but otherwise okay. He said they did not know the suspects, but he believed it was an attempted robbery.
Victoria Escontrias, who lives next door, said the family is quiet and keep to themselves, but said there’s been an uptick in crime in the area. She also thinks her own children would have reacted the same way.
“I don’t want to say you get what you deserve, but you just don’t run up on nobody’s house,” Escontrias said.
Orange County sheriff’s spokeswoman Jane Watrel said the investigation is ongoing but the shooting appears to be a case of self-defense.
