Police believe a 12-year-old boy was the target of a shooting that occurred at a New York barbershop Tuesday afternoon.
Witnesses say the boy was waiting with a friend to get his hair cut around 2:15 p.m. when the shooter walked near the shop’s open door and asked about the boy. Moments later, the suspect fired two rounds, which narrowly missed the boy and everyone else inside.
After firing the rounds, the suspect ran away, and although the boy’s friend chased after him, the suspect was not caught. When police arrived on the scene, they found the 12-year-old hiding in the bathroom of the shop.
Shop owner Rubia Ariste said the boy has been getting his hair cut at the business for almost his entire life. Meanwhile, area residents are wondering what could have prompted the shooting.
“Twelve-year-old kids supposed to be in the house, in school doing something else,” said neighborhood residents Ed Smith. “I’ve never seen or heard anything like that, someone trying to shoot a 12-year-old kid. That’s shocking.”
Authorities say the boy lives in a public housing development that’s notorious for strong division among rival gangs. The boy said he did not recognize the shooter, who asked about the housing development before he opened fire.
