A 19-year-old man was shot and killed as he broke into an Indianapolis apartment last week.
The resident is a mother who had several young children in the home with her at the time of the break-in, which occurred just after 1 p.m. on June 7.
Police say the woman grabbed her gun when she heard the intruder breaking in, and when she came face-to-face with the suspect, who was armed, she opened fire.
When officers arrived, they found the suspect lying in the doorway. He was pronounced dead at the scene and later identified as 19-year-old Michael Hawkins.
The woman and the children were not physically harmed.
“It is disheartening that we see burglaries resulting in death,” said Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Aaron Hamer, “But we live in Indiana and it’s legal for people to have guns to protect themselves.”
