A violent domestic dispute over the weekend in Lincoln County, Mississippi, ended with one man dead and his wife in the hospital.
The incident unfolded around 12:40 a.m. Sunday. The woman’s neighbor, Charles Polk, said the woman showed up at his house looking for help. She said she had been assaulted and just shot her husband.
“I don’t see where she had much choice because that girl was beaten to smithereens. She was beat bad,” Polk said. “She had a gun. I got her to calm down, put the gun down.”
When sheriff’s deputies arrived at the home, they found the woman’s husband inside. He was identified as Cody A. Newell, 25, and pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman, whose name was not released, was taken to a local hospital but later transferred to another hospital in Jackson. She reportedly suffered “extensive physical injuries.”
“She said he had beaten her for hours, and I can believe every bit of that. Her whole face was a bruise,” Polk said.
According to Lincoln County Sheriff Steve Rushing, there were no reports of any prior calls to law enforcement from the woman’s home.
The investigation is ongoing and once completed, will be forwarded to the district attorney’s office and presented to the grand jury to determine whether any charges are appropriate, as is standard procedure. No charges have been filed at this time.
