An attempted armed robbery in Dekalb County, Georgia, early Wednesday morning ended with the suspect dead after the victims – a father and his 16-year-old son – fought back against their assailant.
The incident unfolded just after 2 a.m. at the family’s apartment. Police say the father, Roy Farrell, 39, and his son were confronted by the suspect, held at gunpoint, and forced to go to a nearby bank to withdrawal money from an ATM.
However, while at the ATM, the teen choked the suspect, giving his father a chance to grab the suspect’s gun. Farrell then fired five shots, striking the suspect.
Farrell and his son, who are not expected to face charges, waited at the bank for police to arrive.
The suspect, whose name was not released but is said to have been 19 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities did not say whether the victims knew the suspect, but the incident has neighbors in the apartment complex on edge.
