Army ROTC Cadet Meghan Copenhaver graduated from the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, making history as the Army’s first 4th-generation paratrooper.
A student at Christopher Newport University, Copenhaver completed the three-week 507th Parachute Infantry Regiment’s Basic Airborne Course which includes drops from 34- and 250-foot towers as well as five jumps from aircraft.
Her parents graduated Jump School, as did her grandfather in 1966. Her great-grandfather, Col. John Hughes, jumped at Normandy on D-Day with the famed 82nd Airborne Divison before going on to serve in Korea and Vietnam.
Copenhaver’s grandfather, Col. William Hughes, complete with a Ranger-tabbed eyepatch, was on hand for her graduation on Aug. 18 and was a featured speaker.
Copenhaver, who starts her junior year at CNU in the fall, hopes to continue her military career in the intelligence field once she completes her degree.
