A woman who was house sitting for her daughter at her apartment in Oceanside, California, last week was shot in the leg when the upstairs neighbor accidentally fired a round through the floor while cleaning his handgun.
No one else was injured, and the man is not facing charges at this time, although that could change, as the investigation is ongoing. Neither of their names have been released.
The man said he sat down to clean his 9mm just before 11 p.m. on Aug. 15, and moments later he accidentally fired a chambered round through the floor, striking the woman, who was sitting on the couch watching TV.
The man immediately ran to the downstairs apartment to help the woman and called 911. According to reports, when paramedics and police arrived, the man was still with the woman rendering aid as best he could. However, officials with the Oceanside Fire Department said the woman was unconscious and barely breathing as they loaded her into the ambulance.
The woman was rushed to an area hospital. Her injuries were deemed life-threatening, but her current condition has not been made public at this time.
