‘Non-functional’ BB gun lands middle school students in hot water

smash and grab

Three middle school students were placed in police custody Tuesday and now face misdemeanor charges for bringing a BB gun to a school in Brandon, Florida.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office apparently learned about the BB gun through tips on social media, and McClane Middle School, which is located about 10 miles east of Tampa, was placed on lockdown after authorities received the alert.

School resource officers and security officers located two of the students in question, and a search of their backpacks turned up the BB gun, which was described as “non-functional.”

It’s unclear how the third student was involved in the incident, but all three were taken into custody and charged with disruption of a school function and resisting arrest without violence.

The school does not allow weapons of any kind on campus. No other weapons were found and no one was injured.

The sheriff’s office took the opportunity to remind kids and parents alike that even toy guns can lead to dangerous, even sometimes deadly, situations, calling them “problematic for law enforcement when confronting students in these situations.”
