Texas Motor Speedway skips celebratory gunfire after church shooting

Texas Motor Speedway

For the first time in more than a decade, the traditional celebratory gunfire wasn’t heard at the Texas Motor Speedway Sunday during the AAA Texas 500.

The decision to skip the gunfire – which is done via six-shooters with blanks – was made by track president Eddie Gossage after a Sunday morning shooting at a church in Sutherland Springs, Texas, left 26 dead. The gunman was also killed.

“In light of what happened, it was the respectful thing to do,” Gossage said.

It was the first time since 2013 officials opted out of the celebratory gunfire, which has been the center of controversy in the past. Gossage said he will speak with team owners about future victory lane procedures.
