When guns were initially used for hunting the weapons were very unwieldy and only black powder could be used in them. Today however, although you can still use such weapons there are now more technologically advanced versions of them available that you can use instead. As well as these weapons weighing less they are a great deal more accurate and their range is much greater. Also you will find that you can fire these types of guns much more successfully.
Up until a few years ago hunters would use the latest rifles to help them, but over time found that they made the whole process a lot less challenging. Plus as the accessories provided with these weapons were so advanced it made hunting a great deal easier. It is for this reason that so many hunters are now choosing to use black powder guns for hunting as they find they make it so much more exciting.
So what challenges will you face if you decide to use a gun loaded with black powder over some of the advanced types of hunting rifles available? Below we take a look at a number of these.
Challenge 1 – You will find that you will need to carry a great deal more compared to using a more conventional hunting rifle. Along with the gun you will need to carry powder, patches, balls, patch tubes, cleaning jags, balls, ball pulling worm, loading ramrods and of course solvent. Whereas with a conventional hunting rifle you just need to carry the weapon and of course the ammunition.
Challenge 2 – Although these weapons are extremely accurate you will actually need to get closer to your prey to ensure that you hit them in a place that will kill them immediately. Whereas with a conventional hunting rifle you can be as much as 200 yards away to shoot them as they will be fitted with a scope to help you get a clear line of fire on them animal.
Challenge 3 – Not only will you give off a scent but the paraphernalia you take with you when hunting using a black powder gun will carry a scent as well. If you approach an animal upwind then of course they will smell this scent from you and immediately make their getaway.
Challenge 4 – You need to be much more patient when you decide to go hunting with this type of weapon over a conventional hunting rifle. This is because you will not only have to move in much closer to the animal you intend to kill but also make sure that you get in to a position so that the angle is right. If you are not in the right position then the risk of you harming rather than killing the animal you are hunting is much higher.
Challenge 5 – Although a black powder gun may not have so many moving parts as the modern hunting rifles you still need to spend a great deal of time looking after them. Again, if not cared for properly the risk of them not working properly is increased.
