On Tuesday, hundreds of New York gun owners descended upon the state capitol building in Albany to push for the full repeal of the significantly flawed NY SAFE Act or as it’s also known the Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement Act.

Along with their pro-Second Amendment signs and paraphernalia, the gun rights activists who attended the event brought with them 400,000 signed postcards from fellow gun owners addressed to state lawmakers iterating the message: scrap the SAFE Act or lose your job!

The event was organized by NY2A Grassroots Coalition, which is as the name implies and as their website states, “a coalition of grassroots organizations committed to defeating the NY SAFE Act and the legislators who voted for it!”

According to Lisa Donovan, one of NY2A’s leaders, the key to overturning the NY SAFE Act is getting gun owners to become more politically engaged so that lawmakers feel the pressure at the polls come 2014.

“We are going to vote out the people who did this to us,” Donovan told the crowd, as the Associated Press reported.

While she acknowledged that rolling back the law will be an uphill battle because around 60 percent of the state’s population hail from Bloomberg country aka New York City, which tends to favor gun control, she also explained to attendees that real change is possible because “elections depend on turnouts and people who actively work hard at the campaigns.”

On that note, she pointed to a map depicting all the upstate cities, counties and towns that have approved resolutions opposing the NY SAFE Act.

Donovan’s message certainly resonated with James R. Colloca, a gun owner from Oswego, who told the Associated Press that although he and his friend had already contacted their state representatives about the law, they’re “Not about to give up.”

“I don’t trust the government to do the right thing anymore,” Colloca added.

The NY SAFE Act was the brainchild of Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the first comprehensive gun control bill passed in the wake of the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, CT.

It put forth a number of inane measures that restrict the rights of law-abiding gun owners, among them it broadened the definition of an ‘assault’ weapon (one cosmetic feature: barrel shroud, pistol grip; as opposed to two) and required registration of all the newly defined ‘assault’ weapons.

Additionally, the NY SAFE Act placed a ban on magazines that hold more than 10 rounds and does not permit gun owners to load more than seven rounds in those ten round magazines. Moreover, there is no grandfather clause for magazines that hold more than 10 rounds.

This Albany rally is just one of many pro-gun/anti SAFE Act rallies that have occurred across the state since the law was passed in January. In fact there was one held last weekend in Rome, NY, at the Fort Stanwix National Monument.

While the fate of the NY SAFE Act is not clear, what is clear is that NY gun owners are not going to go down without a fight.

Police officers across the country have been attempting to seize cell phones by claiming the devices could be weapons.

A recent case involves Detective Shannon Todd of the Newark Police Gang Unit. She approaches a young man who is recording a police stop on his cell phone, and orders him to “put your phone down, put it in your pocket.” Despite affirming the device is a phone, Todd remarks “I need to hold on to it,” before stating, “May I look at it and inspect it to ensure it’s not a firearm.”

Although recording a police officer is not a crime, law enforcement is getting more creative at preventing their images from showing up on YouTube and going “viral,” by asserting cell phones may present physical threats (see below).

It’s official – American drones have been used to kill four U.S. citizens in Yemen and Pakistan since 2009.

Embattled Attorney General Eric Holder sent a confirmation letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee Wednesday, acknowledging the deadly drone strikes. Referring to the killings as “counterterrorism operations,” Holder said the Obama administration was “aware” of four Americans killed since 2009 – Anwar al-Awlaki; Samir Khan; Jude Kennan Mohammed and Awlaki’s son Abdulrahman Anwar al-Awlaki. The acknowledgement came ahead of a major counterterrorism policy speech by President Obama scheduled for today.

The White House responded minutes after the information was made public, saying President Obama ordered the disclosure to build on his effort to “to pursue greater transparency around our counter-terrorism operations.” The killing of Anwar al-Awlaki, a New Mexico native who was educated at George Washington University, had already sparked widespread debate regarding whether an American citizen abroad or on U.S. soil should be targeted and killed without a trial.

Holder explained the administration’s rationale in dealing with al-Awlaki:

“[He]was a senior operational leader of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the most dangerous regional affiliate of al Qaeda and a group that has committed numerous terrorist attacks overseas and attempted multiple times to conduct terrorist attacks against the U.S. homeland.”

It took less than 10 seconds, but for a deputy sheriff making a routine traffic stop two months ago, it ended in horror – and it was captured on camera.

The video was taken by 27-year-old Montague County Sheriff’s Deputy James Boyd’s dashcamera. It shows Boyd pulling over a black sedan with Colorado plates on Highway 28 and matter-of-factly walking over to the vehicle.

Evan Ebel

But within moments, Boyd is seen flailing, twisting and ultimately hitting the ground. He had been shot three times. Two bullets struck his bullet-proof vest and a third grazed his forehead. The gunman, Evan Ebel, a convicted felon, sped away. Luckily a passerby, an off-duty Johnson County Sheriff’s Detective, pulls over and calls for help.

Ebel was being sought for the death of Colorado Prison Chief Tom Clements and a Denver pizza delivery driver. The felon was later killed in a shootout thanks to Boyd’s description of Ebel’s vehicle. The deputy survived, making a full recovery.

That’s some serious aftermarket work on that Glock. Not cheap, either, but for race guns there never seems to be a limit on what you can spend.

Of all of the changes, I can’t stress the undercut trigger guard more. Even for carry guns. Not only does it solve Glock knuckle, if you’re carrying a compact gun like the new Glock 30S it can, at least in my experience, prevent magazine pinching.

I mean, no, I don’t care when a gun gives me a blood blister. Real operators cut off their pinkies anyhow, they just get in the way.

Plaxico Burress, illegal concealed-carry self-inflicted gunshot-wounded anti-gun spokesman and wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers is (ha ha) kicking off a new line of high-end clothing. Sweatpants with a reinforced internal belt for IWB holsters? No, socks. Socks that stay up while holding an ankle holster in place? No, stripey socks.

Yes, Plaxico, the name synonymous with shooting yourself in the ass while drinking is attempting to glamorize his image with a line of premium under-shoe footwear.

“The news release seemed like a punch line to an untold joke. Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Plaxico Burress, who spent nearly two years in prison after accidentally shooting himself in the right thigh through a pair of sweat pants while at a trendy New York nightclub, was set to host a rooftop party at, you guessed it, a trendy New York nightclub introducing his new men’s luxury hosiery line.

“In other words, a fashion accessory headlined an event Friday night that featured a tower of Champagne-filled glasses, a Maserati convertible and female models wearing nothing but white tuxedo shirts, Buddy Holly eyeglasses and Plaxico Burress Collection socks on their feet.

“The hosiery will retail for $24 or more a pair, and will be released to retail next month. To help promote the line, Burress has made the usual news media rounds and started a Twitter account, @PlaxicosSocks, which he uses to crowd source queries like: ‘I think I may have to design a special pair of Limited Edition Black and Gold sock. What do you think?’”

If you’re interested in picking up a pair or two head over to the Plaxico Burress Collection where you can consider joining the Sock Army.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-59153 " alt="Should conceal carry permit holders be allowed to carry in establishments that serve alcohol?
Lawmakers in South Carolina are currently reviewing a bill that, if passed, would allow anyone with a valid concealed carry license to carry a firearm into a restaurant or bar that serves alcohol. State law currently prohibits firearms from being carried into establishments which serve alcohol, and not everyone is happy about the proposed change.

Dirk Coetzee, owner of Kwagga Sports Bar, told a local news station, that while he personally feels that people should be allowed to carry either with or without a permit, when asked about allowing firearms within his own establishment though, his tone changed. “I don’t want to motivate people to carry guns in bars, I don’t think that’s a good idea. I think it’s better to leave it in your car if you feel you need it,” he said.

Sylvie Dessau of Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense, the same organization which recently scolded pop star Britney Spears for allowing her son to play with a toy gun, agrees that guns don’t belong in bars or restaurants. She explains, “If you have several people in a restaurant or bar who feel threatened and they have guns, when the police officers get there, who’s the good guy, who’s the bad guy?”

However, South Carolina Sen. Greg Hembree, who supports the bill, disagrees, “I have had more experiences with a concealed weapons holder doing the right thing than doing the wrong thing.” He also points out that by denying the right to carry into such establishments, the right to self-defense, their means of protection should a threat arise, is also taken away.

Barry Walker, chef and owner of Mac’s on Main agrees, and when asked if he would allow concealed weapons in his establishment he responded with, “Absolutely,” adding, “Come and rob Mac’s on Main if you want to see what happens.” A gun in a car of the parking lot at Mac’s would do nothing to stop a robbery.

Some are concerned about the effect of mixing guns and alcohol, a valid concern, indeed. Currently, it is a violation of the law for concealed carry permit holders to consume alcohol while carrying a firearm, as it is in most states, and a violation can result in your permit being revoked. That part of the law will not change.

Additionally, the bill will allow any bar or restaurant to make their own decisions about whether or not to allow concealed firearms within its doors. Business owners will have the option of posting “No Concealable Weapons Allowed” signs to prohibit customers from bringing firearms inside.

While some establishments will ban concealed carry to reduce liability that may fall on them, there’s an often overlooked element of any such establishment that’s involved in a shooting, whether it be legal or not. Bars or restaurants that are the stage for such acts, more times than not, close their doors after the incident. It’s a chance that some business owners, regardless of their own personal beliefs about Second Amendment rights, just may not be willing to take.

The bill made its way through the Senate last month and is now being reviewed by the House Judiciary committee, where it is expected to most likely pass.

Should firearms be allowed to be carried by those with a valid CCL in establishments that serve alcohol? What do you think?

A man in the East Helena Valley of Montana returned home on Wednesday afternoon to find that someone had broken into his house. Only the burglar was still in the home and upon confronting him the homeowner shot and killed him. A report by a local news station states that police are now investigating the possibility that the same burglar is linked to at least two other home burglaries in the area.

According to the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff’s Department, they received a 911 call around 2:40 in the afternoon from the homeowner, who told them that he had just shot a man who he found had broken into his home in an attempt to steal valuables.

The homeowner fired one shot at the man, hitting him once in the chest. The man then broke a window from the inside of the home in an attempt to quickly escape from the armed homeowner. He tried to drive off in a car, which police say was not registered to him, but hit a nearby fence. The man, who has not yet been identified, died in the car as a result of the gunshot wound.

Authorities say that shortly after receiving the 911 call from the homeowner, they received other calls in the area of houses that had been burglarized. Police feel that the incidents may be connected, as the manner in which they were all broken into were similar and pillow cases were found that may tie the scenes together. Apparently the pillow cases had been taken from the homes and used to gather items within the homes.

The Montana Highway Patrol is processing the scene of the shooting, working from the outside through the inside of the home, a procedure which they say is time consuming.

Police are not saying whether the man acted alone in the burglaries or if he was armed with a firearm or any other type of weapon.

The homeowner was not injured during the incident.

Bet you didn’t know the NRA was established by Franklin Delano Roosevelt? Because it was. Although it’s probably not the NRA you’re thinking about.

The National Recovery Administration aka the NRA, was the first big legislative attempt to remedy the Great Depression by FDR and his administration. And although no rifles were involved, the newly founded agency took aim at stabilizing industrial production and enabled workers to pursue collective bargaining at unprecedented levels.

Businesses and factories would display the NRA’s logo – an eagle clutching a gear in one set of talons and lighting bolts in the other, indicating the power of American industry, in order to promote the ideas pushed by FDR’s brainchild.

Now you might wonder why the government would risk having their new agency confused with the National Rifle Association, but the NRA, formed back in 1871, was a relatively obscure organization back then – sponsoring rifle clubs and youth programs. It wasn’t until 1934 that the National Rifle Association we know and love began transforming into the lobbying superpower it is today.

Before the National Recovery Administration was dissolved in 1935, a new NFL franchise in Philadelphia hoped to grab a little piece of New Deal optimism for its own – adopting the NRA’s symbol as a team name.

The more you know…
