Colt Infantry Automatic Rifle (IAR)

Description

The Colt Infantry Automatic Rifle, formerly known as the Colt Automatic Rifle, is a fully-automatic military weapon chambered in 5.56 NATO or .223 Remington. The IAR is based on the M16 or M4 design, the primary service weapons of the U.S. military since the Vietnam War. Though, this type of rifle has been around since the M16 was first introduced, the IAR has an advanced heat system, so it can sustain the high rate of fire and maintain decent accuracy.

Colt’s IAR is basically a redesign of the Colt Automatic Rifle. One of the most obvious differences between the two is the CAR is a belt-fed weapon, whereas the IAR is magazine fed. And handguards and rails were added as well.

The IAR has an open-bolt design, meaning the bolt’s natural position is
to the rear. This allows heat to dissipate much more rapidly than a
closed bolt would. To handle the pressure of the fully-automatic fire, the gun includes a
foregrip to assist in stabilizing the gun and a heat sink system is attached to the
barrel to reduce the risk of cook-offs during extended
periods of firing. The heat sink also helps preserve the barrel over
time.

Do not confuse Colt’s IAR with the Heckler & Koch‘s M27 Infantry Automatic Rifle, which in 2011 was considered a possible replacement for the M249 SAW.

The IAR features a patented monolithic upper receiver with three Picatinny rails at the 12-, 3-, and 9-o’clock positions. The rifle also has a lower rail system at the 6 o’clock position. The barrel is 16-inches long and the retractable stock goes from 33.5 inches to 36.75 inches. The IAR also features an ambidextrous safety.

Colt is a famed American gun manufacturer founded in 1836. The company is best known for its revolvers and pistols, but also produces a variety of civilian and military gun designs used all over the world.
