The Rohrbaugh Robar is a semi-automatic pocket pistol chambered in 9mm. Rohrbaugh Firearms is a gun manufacturer founded my Karl Rohrbaugh and located in Bayport, New York. The Robar is one of three pistols produced by Rohrbaugh, and shares near identical specifications with both the R9 and 380.
The Robar has a locked-breech design where the barrel and slide are locked together until a round is fired and then the move in tandem. The slide rides back, the barrel tilts and the recoil is absorbed by the slide instead of the frame.
The Robar features a stainless steel slide with a blade front sight and notch rear sight. The frame, grips, and internal components are constructed primarily from stainless steel and 7057 aircraft aluminum alloy and weighs slightly less than a pound. The Robar features a double-action trigger, so it excludes a safety. The Robar includes Wolff brand springs and G-10 brand grips, which is a laminated composite grip known for its durability. The magazine catch is located on the butt of the grip frame, a design sometimes called “European style.” A number of the gun’s interior components are miniaturized to facilitate the diminutive design.
The Robar differs from the R9 and 380 in that it employs an NP3 coating made by Robar, a company that specializes in metal finishes. The NP3 is a surface treatment that combines Teflon and electroless nickel to create a protective finish that reduces friction and wear, while increasing durability, corrosion resistance, and overall life expectancy of the firearm. According to the manufacturer, the use of NP3 coating eliminates the need to lubricate gun surfaces, and also minimizes the need for regular gun cleaning.
Rohrbaugh recommends the Robar for conceal carry and personal protection. Interestingly, not only is Robar a company and a gun, but also the spanish-language verb for ‘to rob.’
