SIG Sauer P229

Description

The SIG Sauer P229 is a semi-automatic medium-frame pistol chambered for 9mm, .40 S&W and .357 SIG. SIG Sauer is a German based arms manufacturer, but the P229 is manufactured in Exeter, New Hampshire. As noted by the manufacturer, the P229 use is prevalent among law enforcement professionals in the US.

The P229 features black polymer grips, a black hard anodized alloy frame, and a Nitron coated alloy slide. Nitron is a protective finish that increases both corrosion resistance and overall durability. It has a short Picatinny rail for easy mounting of accessories and it has contrast sights, but Siglite brand night sights are also available for an additional $74.

SIG recommends the P229 for law enforcement use.

Editor Review

Clearly, the Glock 17, 1911 and Browning Hi-Power are among the few semi-automatic handguns that have reached iconic status. One handgun that is often omitted from the list by mistake is the SIG P229.

As the primary issue gun of the United States Secret Service, the SIG P229 has a truly high calling and years of field use have shown it to be up to the task. Considered by many to be the pinnacle of double-action semi-auto design, it boasts excellent ergonomics, high capacity and drop-dead reliability.

The SIG also has a lightweight frame and is relatively compact size making it an excellent civilian concealed carry gun.

Unlike the other iconic handguns, however, the SIG P229 is a traditional double-action semi-auto, which has some distinct drawbacks. The long DA trigger pull required for the first shot is often a problem for shooters because it requires a tremendous amount of trigger control to shoot accurately. Once the first shot is fired in DA mode, the hammer is cocked by the action and it changes to single-action for follow-up shots.

That transition between DA and SA is a problem for some shooters and requires a fair amount of training to master. Still, the P229 is a proven self-defense weapon and has helped law enforcement officers and civilians survive thousands of gunfights.

For all the drawbacks inherent in traditional DA handguns, there is one advantage. Like a revolver or Glock style pistol, the SIG is designed to be fired by pulling the trigger without the need to deactivate a manual safety. Instead, the SIG has a de-cocker that allows the shooter to safely de-cock the hammer after firing.

Many self-defense aficionados think the lack of manual safety is a huge benefit in a gunfight because it eliminates an extra step from the firing process. Others consider a manual safety as a must on a self-defense handgun to help mitigate the threat of a negligent discharge.

As with most gun related debates, the ultimate choice is with the shooter and neither option is wrong.

As you can imagine, a gun that is chosen to protect the president must be inherently reliable and the SIG P229 is considered among the most reliable handguns ever devised. Other handguns can claim to be as reliable as the trusty SIG, but none can claim to be more reliable.

Operating the P229 reveals it is a truly refined and smooth handgun, which makes it easy to operate. From the factory, all the controls move with a feeling of supreme quality. A fact that gives the user a sense that the gun was designed to perform under the most difficult circumstances.  SIG also does a great job of removing sharp edges so handling the gun will not tear up your hands, or carry gear.

All the excellent attributes make the SIG P229 an excellent choice for self-defense, provided the shooter can train enough to overcome the DA trigger.
