The Sig Sauer Sig 556 Russian is a semi-automatic tactical carbine chambered in 7.62x39mm. The Russian is the newest version of the 556 series and modified to fire the popular AK47’s 7.62 cartridge.
The Russian has a gas piston operating system, which functions by propellant gases entering a port near the muzzle, the gas enters a tube that’s directed onto a piston, the piston hits the bolt and pushes it rearward. The Russian also has a two-position adjustable gas valve, so shooters can control the gas pressure used to push the bolt. Sig says this feature is intended to provide smoother cycling with different types of ammunition or a change in the weather. Kind of like how some trucks are built with “four-wheel drive” and “two-wheel drive,” so they’ll be able to drive on different surfaces.
Features on the Russian include a cold hammer forged barrel, so a machine carefully cut the grooves in the bore. This process provides durable rifling. The Classic’s stock is collapsible for storage, but also adjustable for length. It has a polymer fore-end with a short Picatinny rail on the top and bottom for easy mounting of optics or accessories. It has a mini red dot sight and a two-stage trigger that sets off the action with a longer pull. And, it uses standard AK47 magazines.
Sig Sauer recommends the Russian for hunting small to medium game or Special Forces.
